Hello! I'm Mrs. Flamm, Winfield Middle's Art Teacher. My passion is (you guessed it...) ART! I consider myself an artist just as much as I consider myself a teacher. I believe that every student has a creative gene somewhere in their body. Even if they give me the dreaded line, "I can barely draw a stick figure!", I feel that if they gave their absolute best effort on that stick figure, then it is art. It's all about the effort and willingness to progress!
I can trace my love of art back to one particular moment. In Kindergarten, I built a clay spider with ten legs, wearing a backpack. It was chosen out of my whole class to be featured at a gallery. From then on, I decided to become an artist.
I studied Studio Art at Lindenwood University, where I discovered how to look at the world differently. I also learned how to draw mechanically and emotionally, paint and break down colors, dabbled in graphic design, and built up an insatiable interest in art history. I also gained the knowledge of how to build a brick kiln in my backyard (it can also bake pizzas!), poured cast iron, learned that screen printing is more fun when the classroom is in the warehouse in which the theater keeps all their creepy costumes and props, and discovered that even when you don't think your work is good enough, show it off anyway. I was awarded Second place in the Lindenwood Student Juried Art Exhibition for building a functional lamp out of magazine pages (with matching chair!), and placed again for a linoleum print and a graphics submission featuring my favorite fictional hero, Harry Potter. Apart from loving the experiences and individuality I gained during my art studies, I also met my future husband when we sat next to each other in our Intro to Design class.
Apart from a love of teaching and art, I enjoy drawing, reading, music, concerts, all food (except tomatoes), spending time with my family and friends, taking walks and outdoor hikes, and of course my adorable dachshund, Dexter, and our rescue, Drax.
My family has taught me to live life by the motto, "Carpe diem." Seize the day!
